Writers play a variety of roles across a wide range of industries. Here are some examples of writing careers.

Editor

Editors are responsible for reading, revising and publishing written material. Editors check texts for errors in spelling and grammar, verify the accuracy of facts and make suggestions to improve stories. Editors may decide whether or not an author’s submission, such as an opinion article or short story, will be published.

Technical Writer

Technical writers explain complex products or processes in plain language. Technical writers create how-to manuals, articles, and brochures for tech products and software. Technical writers work with other professionals, such as hardware engineers and software developers to gain a deeper understanding of a product’s or digital service’s operation. Technical writers are a subset that applies these skills in the medical and healthcare field.

Writer or Author

Writers, authors, and other writers create various written content including books, articles for newspapers and magazines, scripts for films, and blog posts. They work closely together with editors to create well-written copy that drives compelling narratives. Some authors and writers are full-time employees; others work as contractors or freelancers, contributing articles to different clients or publications.

Reporter

Reporters inform the public about current events, breaking news and other information. Reporters research and pitch stories that are newsworthy, interview sources, and write within tight deadlines. They also analyse data, such as court documents or video surveillance, to inform their reporting. Some journalists work for magazines and newspapers. Some reporters write and report for radio or TV. Public Relations Specialist

The public relations specialist uses their writing abilities to influence the public’s perception of their clients.
