This bustling treasure trove has a lot to offer, so let’s take a closer look at this much-loved gem in the heart of Birmingham.
A one-of-a-kind gem
Founded more than 250 years ago, the Jewellery Quarter is a conservation area that houses more than 200 listed properties. It is estimated that around 40 per cent of jewellery in Britain is created right here. The hotspot is located within walking distance of the noteworthy Key Hill and Warstone Lane cemeteries, in which many of the city’s reputable inventors were buried.
With more than 100 independent stores, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to browsing and buying. There are also workshops to get involved with and craftspeople who can custom make bespoke items that will make the perfect gift for a loved one or a special treat for yourself.
More than just pretty pearls
It is not just jewellery manufacturing, diamonds and gifts that make the Jewellery Quarter unique.
If you want to explore a little more history, head to the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter. It celebrates its 25-year anniversary this year, with over 750,000 happy visitors passing through its doors. When you have finished here, step inside the English Heritage-owned Silver Factory and then venture out to the Pen Museum on Frederick Street to see the pen wielded by Walt Disney.
You will be a stone’s throw from St Paul’s Square and the Jeweller’s Church in the Georgian Square, which is a perfect picnic spot.
Change things up a little and soak up the local artistry and culture. You will find a range of galleries nearby and events throughout the year, from jewellery auctions to live music and plays.
For visitors to the area, there are many hotels from which to choose; alternatively, check out the Birmingham apartments on offer, such as Birmingham Serviced Apartments. Stay a little longer and allow yourself the chance to really explore everything the Quarter and surrounding areas have to offer.
You can satisfy your hunger with a range of eateries, from independent restaurants and cafes to recognisable brands offering everything from Chinese to Italian and British fare. If you want a taste of fame while you are at it, check out Lasan, which was awarded the Best UK Local Restaurant title by Gordon Ramsay’s The F Word.
