Steel palisade fencing is very hardy but requires some ongoing maintenance to protect its looks and effectiveness as a security fence.
Check for Rust Early
Identify areas where rust may be forming. Surface rust can be removed using a wire-brush, a rust-converter primer applied and then painted to prevent further corrosion. If left to spread through the steel it can cause significant structural problems.
Inspect Fixings and Bolts
Bolts working loose – This can occur, especially if there is a lot of movement around the site with vehicles etc. Tighten up any slack fixings and replace any corroded or missing bolts.
Check Pale Alignment
Check Pale Alignment – badly bent or displaced pales create dangerous gaps which must be remedied immediately. Pale alignment must be checked and any minor bends in pales straightened using a mallet where possible. Very badly deformed pales must be replaced.
Clear Vegetation From the Fence Line
Grass, ivy, and brambles against steel are deadly. Regular cutting of vegetation against the fence, and clearance of debris at the base of the fence is required.
Apply Protective Coating on a Schedule
Repainting can be a simple maintenance task if done every 3-5 years and also helps to protect the steel from corrosion.
