What a Care Assistant Job Involves

Daily Tasks

Daily tasks would include assisting clients with personal care (bath, shower, dressing) as well as preparing meals, administering medication at correct times and providing companionship. Every client is different and has different routines, which is why it is so important to be reliable and consistent.

Skills and Qualities Employers Look For

Patience and good communication skills are key qualities that most employers are looking for. In addition to this, it is also important to have an understanding of safe manual handling practices in order to physically support clients who have limited mobility.

Working Patterns and Settings

Care Assistant Jobs are available in Home Visiting, Live-in Care and Residential Care Settings. The shifts will vary from early morning starts, evening work and/or weekend work so flexibility is required.

Training and Qualifications

Most employers will start new employees off on a structured induction program and expect to see them complete a care certificate within a couple of months. This will cover areas such as safeguarding, person-centred care, health and safety, and more. QQI awards and manual handling certificates are also frequently required by employers in Ireland.

Career Progression

As you gain more experience you can progress to Senior Carer, Team Leader or even a Care Coordinator role.
