Emergency First Aid Training for New Starters

As part of your new staff member’s onboarding process it’s easy to forget to book them onto an Emergency First Aid Training Course. However, as with all aspects of the onboarding process, there is much work that goes on behind the scenes, and investing time in the correct training for your new employee as soon as possible is not only a legal requirement but also makes sense!

When to Book Training

It is best to try to get new staff to complete a first aid course within the first few weeks of starting. The HSE guidance on workplace first aid requirements outlines the requirements that employers must follow to ensure that their workplace has adequate first aid cover at all times.

Which Roles Need It Soonest

You will find that staff working in warehouses, kitchens, construction sites, care homes etc will be required to complete the training as a matter of their role as soon as possible. Office staff can be scheduled for the training at a later date; however, it is always beneficial to have a first aider on site at all times.

What a One-Day Course Covers

Emergency First Aid Training Courses typically last around 6 hours. Upon completion of the course participants will leave with a 3 year certificate. Some common topics covered in the course are: how to perform CPR, the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), how to deal with a casualty that has choked, how to treat wounds and injuries and how to deal with an unconscious casualty.

How Many Trained Staff You Need

For a small business, such as a shop or office with low risk of injury and fewer than 25 employees then 1 first aider is usually sufficient. However, for a business with more than one shift or on more than one floor then it is recommended to have 1 first aider per shift per floor. Tidal Training can offer 1 to 1 first aid training sessions or group first aid training sessions.

Tracking Certificates and Renewals

Keep a simple spreadsheet with the name of the person who completed the training, the date of the training and the date when the certificate expires. Set a calendar event 3 months before the date of expiry to book the necessary refresher course in time to avoid a gap in cover.

A small investment at the start in training your new staff member in emergency first aid will protect them and your business.
